Meet Dr. Ali Maziad
Dr. Maziad is a Fellowship trained Orthopedic Spine surgeon. He also received Board Certification by the American Board of Clinical Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Maziad has trained in all aspects of spine surgery with many world renowned mentors in the fields of orthopedic and neurosurgical spine.
Ali M. Maziad, MD, PhD
After receiving a bachelor’s degree in medicine and surgery with high honors at the prestigious, Ain Shams University, School of Medicine in Cairo, Dr. Maziad completed basic training in the Orthopaedic surgery at its residency program and received a Masters degree in Orthopedic surgery (MSc).
While in California, Dr. Maziad worked on developing imaging informatics systems for spine surgery procedures which was considered cutting edge research at the time. His work was presented at national and international conferences for Spine surgery and clinical radiology and was later presented to successfully complete his defense for a PhD degree in Orthopedic Surgery research with a focus on Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery.
In 2009, Dr. Maziad moved to California where he joined The University of Southern California (USC) and received a grant from the National Institute of Health to serve as a clinical consultant and complete a fellowship program in imaging informatics. In the meantime, he also conducted training and research in the field of Minimally Invasive Endoscopic Spine Surgery at California Spine Institute. During that time, he successfully completed multiple medical license examinations and received full ECFMG certification as well in 2010.
After conclusion of his fellowship at USC, Dr. Maziad moved to Boston University Medical Center where he completed the University’s Spine fellowship program.
The unique fellowship focused on Minimally invasive spinal procedures for degenerative lumbar and cervical spinal conditions including Minimally invasive spinal Decompression, as well as advanced less invasive and microscopic techniques for spinal fusion and percutaneous spinal fixation for Degenerative conditions, trauma, infections, tumors and deformity.
In 2012, Dr. Maziad was selected from among numerous candidates to join the world renowned Hospital For Special Surgery (HSS) in New York City (Consistently Ranked #1 in Orthopedics & Spine in the Nation by US News and World Report) to start the nation’s only dedicated spine deformity fellowship. He was also appointed as Senior Clinical Associate at the Orthopedic Surgery Department Weill Cornell Medical College.
The fellowship focused exclusively on treatment of spinal deformities both in adults and pediatrics, Revision and failed back surgery, complex sagittal and coronal plane deformity correction and complex spinal osteotomies.
During his time at HSS, Dr. Maziad developed interest in further understanding the complexities of pediatric orthopedic conditions and their relation to spinal deformities. He was offered to join a fellowship in pediatric orthopedics at the University of Connecticut Children’s Hospital to become the first surgeon to join its new program.
Along with general pediatric orthopedics, Dr. Maziad received additional training specifically focused on Pediatric spinal deformities, congenital and early onset scoliosis, growing rod techniques, adolescent scoliosis and deformities related to neuromuscular conditions which is a unique type of training not usually acquired in regular spine fellowships.
After UCONN, Dr. Maziad moved to Michigan in 2014 to join the Spine fellowship program at William Beaumont Health System, Oakland University. The fellowship is one of the busiest programs in the country. During that year and along with the gamut of spinal procedures, Dr. Maziad conducted intensive training in Microscopic techniques, artificial disc replacements, Spinal tumors and cervical spine procedures and deformities.
Along his immense journey in education and training, Dr. Maziad participated in dozens of dedicated spine courses and meetings both domestic and international. He also adopted new cutting edge techniques in minimally invasive spinal surgery including Navigation guided surgery and Robotic assisted procedures which can increase both efficiency and safety of surgeries.
Dr. Maziad also has a big interest in philanthropic activities in underserved areas including spine mission trips to Africa to perform surgeries on neglected and complex spinal deformities that are rarely seen in developed countries and usually conducts two trips each year.
Besides his impeccable training and diversified experience which puts him among the best trained spine surgeons in the world, Dr. Maziad has a strong interest in education and research. He has authored and presented over 50 publications, textbook chapters and presentations at numerous international journals, events and educational meetings & participated in teaching residents at different institutions both domestic and overseas.
Dr. Maziad also received multiple awards and recognitions and continues to be an active member of the spine community. He is a member of multiple scientific societies including American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), Scoliosis Research Society (SRS), AO-Spine Foundation, American Academy of Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery (AAMISMS) and International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery.
Because of his extensively diversified training and experience in various spinal interventions both in adults and pediatrics, Dr. Maziad has developed a strong interest in bridging the gap between conventional spinal surgery and advanced cutting edge technologies in addressing various spinal conditions. He believes that the most effective and least invasive approach should always be the first step in addressing any spinal condition. He also believes that a well informed patient is integral to a successful treatment outcome.
In his spare time, Dr. Maziad enjoys travelling, hiking, scuba diving and singing.
